Theology

In all aspects of the Adolescent Program, we endeavor to encounter God through his creation.  In Sacred Scripture, we seek to get to know Him and ascertain his will through His inspired word.  We spend a good deal of each class reading aloud.  It is in the speaking and hearing of Sacred Scripture that the Holy Spirit can move us effectively.  We also seek out the wisdom of others who have come before us and can shed light on the readings. These reflections from saints are powerful keys to unlocking greater understanding.

Special care is given to attentiveness during times of reading and class discussions follow each passage.  Masterpieces of fine art are studied to gain a greater appreciation for the people and events encountered in our readings. Great emphasis is placed on memorization.  Multiple verses of each book are committed to memory, so that the stories can become the students’ own and be carried with them as they move forward in life.

Theology in the Middle School years alternates between a year of reading and studying Genesis and Exodus to gain an appreciation for the roots of God’s revelation to the human race and a year of reading and studying the Gospel of John, to gain an understanding of the fullness of God’s revelation through Jesus Christ.

In High School, our studies circle back to more of the Old Testament with one year given to a study of the Pentateuch, another to the Historical Books, a third to Wisdom Books and the Prophets, and a fourth year devoted to the Synoptic Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and the Letters of St. Paul.

In addition to these areas of study, in both the Middle School and High School, we also look at the Church’s mass readings during the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent.  This is done to help prepare students for the major feasts of Christmas and Easter.
