Mathematics
The overarching goal of Mathematics is to assist students in their formation of logical thought, their perception of the ordered patterns in the world, and enable them access the order of the universe. In order to do this, Math courses are tailored to meet the needs of individual students. All classes are small, and each student is encouraged to work to mastery. Goals are set on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Teachers track the student’s progress and can make adjustments when necessary to ensure that the pace of the progress matches the capabilities of the student. Assessments are given at intervals throughout the course to ensure mastery.
Mathematics in the Adolescent Program is focused on individual mastery. Meeting in small, mixed-ability classes, students are free to push themselves to learn as much as possible. Lessons are given to either small groups or individual students and follow-up work is done out of a textbook or exercise packets. Assistance is provided on a one-on-one basis. Special emphasis is put on conceptual understanding, learning strategies for solving problems, showing one’s work, and maintaining neatness throughout.
