In this introductory bees community work course, students are guided through essential knowledge and skills for bee colony management. Students will progress through a basic understanding of bees, discover the ins and outs of colony activities, identify and wear appropriate and protective beekeeping equipment, determine the best way for obtaining and preparing for bees, gain practical experience in working with and feeding bees, learn the different techniques for seasonal management for all four seasons, discuss management problems related to their particular bee yard, discuss and obtain products from the hive, identify the various pests of the honey bee, and examine the process of pollination. Students will be directed through the academic and field portions of this course by an experienced beekeeper.
