Spanish (Year 1)

Seventh grade Spanish emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Geography of the Spanish speaking world is an important focus for the first semester. Students learn all the Spanish-speaking countries in the world across continents, and work on vocabulary in the following area; numbers, alphabet, months, seasons, time, calendar, courtesy, friends, family, and home. Spanish grammar includes articles, AR verbs in their singular forms, as well as SER, TENER, IR, DAR, and ESTAR. In the second semester, students are more assured with the Spanish language. Students focus on verbs in their present tense. Students translate conversations, role play scenarios and write simple paragraphs in Spanish. They are expected to conjugate present tense AR, IR, and ER verbs both verbally and in writing. Vocabulary acquisition focuses on clothing, shopping, and foods. As a whole, studying grammar in Spanish also makes students more confident in the grammar of the English language.
