This Sacred Scripture course on the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles examines the New Testament as the fulfillment of God’s saving plan in Jesus Christ. Through close reading of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, students examine the life, teachings, miracles, Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ while attending to the particular presentation of each Gospel. The course then follows the Apostles in Acts, tracing the coming of the Holy Spirit, the growth of the early Church, and the spread of the Gospel from Jerusalem to the nations. As students move from Christ’s earthly ministry to the apostolic mission of the Church, they consider the unity of the New Testament and the continuity between Christ’s work and the life of His Church. Through close reading, discussion, memorization, Socratic questioning, and written reflection, students deepen their understanding of Scripture and encounter the Gospels as the living Word of God, calling them to faith, discipleship, virtue, and participation in the life of the Church.
