This Music History course introduces students to the great works and composers of music throughout history, beginning with George Frideric Handel and concluding with George Gershwin. Students trace the development of musical performance, composition, sound, and style in chronological order, comparing and contrasting works across periods. Through guided listening and score study, students identify key features of each composer’s work. As a culminating experience, students attend a classical symphony performance in San Francisco, for which they are prepared in advance.
