Book Club is the Adolescent Program’s Middle School literature course. Students discuss short stories and novels in a Socratic seminar format beginning with questions posed by both the teacher and the students. These questions provide a structure for students to explore the text in more depth, uncovering themes and exploring characters. Students are also presented with lessons on various aspects of literature that enable them to begin a more serious analysis of the text. In addition to reading assignments and annotations of the text, students keep a commonplace book to record characters, questions, quotes and reflections that arise from the reading and discussions. The commonplace book becomes a place to collect thoughts, ideas, and inspirations for further reflection, discussion, and development.
