Latin (Year 1)

During the first year of Latin studies in the Adolescent Program, students will begin their work on new, language-specific skills, including studying parts of speech, different functions of nouns in sentences, conjugated verbs, and elements of both simple and complex sentences. In addition to these more general grammar and syntax skills, students begin to build a Latin vocabulary and an understanding of Latin sentence structure. They are introduced to the idea of case and Latin as an inflected language. All of these skills feed into the most important skills of all: the ability to comprehend Latin confidently and accurately, and to provide answers in Latin to questions about their readings. Additionally, students also spend time analyzing English words and looking at their Latin root words, and in reading and discussing elements of Roman society and daily life.
