Utilizing the Cambridge Latin series, this Latin I course emphasizes learning Latin through the translation of stories set in ancient Pompeii. The course focuses on reading comprehension in the target language, with new vocabulary and grammar introduced within the stories. When possible, new concepts are discussed in reference to the characters and events in the stories, giving students a frame of reference for new words and ideas. Students learn about the Classical world and its ideas alongside their study of the Latin language. Once students establish a basic understanding of Latin sentence structure, they supplement their studies by reading Latin novellas that use cognates and basic Latin vocabulary to support comprehension. Examples of texts read together include Labyrinthus, Familia Mala, and Ego, Polyphemus.
