Science of Bees

This science of bees course provides a broad-based overview of bee science for beginning students of apiculture. The program encourages students to consider the interconnectivity of the bees with our farm and agricultural landscape. This connection becomes the foundation to study sustainable approaches to keeping bees and the food we are growing on our property. It investigates the impact of our agricultural practices, including our apiary, our garden, and school grounds. The class provides a closer look at our changing environment and how we’ll need to modify our practice in light of change. Specific objectives for the course are to teach about sustainable beehive management and the scientific method for responsible beekeeping. Their final projects give an opportunity to go more in-depth into individual topics of interest. Students then present these final projects to the larger school community at the conclusion of the cycle.
