Civics

This Civics course focuses on helping students understand the United States Constitution and the ideas that shape American government. Students study the Constitution and Bill of Rights alongside other key historical documents to learn how the legislative, executive, and judicial branches function and how power is shared between federal, state, and local governments. The course explores why these structures were created, how they have been interpreted over time, and how they are meant to protect freedom while promoting responsibility. Students also learn about elections, political parties, and public discourse, and consider the role citizens play in maintaining a healthy constitutional republic. Through reading, discussion, writing, memorization of important passages, and research, students grow in clear thinking, thoughtful expression, and an appreciation for the civic responsibilities that come with self-government.
