Science of Chickens

This chickens course focuses primarily on chick embryology, which is the development of the young chick embryo through the twenty-one-day cycle. Students learn the structure and function of the egg, reproduction of birds, reproduction cycles of the hen, breeds, genetics, and care of early chick life. Students also study and examine the basic chicken anatomy and physiology so as to better understand the structure of the bird, health and nutrition needs. Additionally, they undertake the daily routine management of this species. Lessons are based on both classroom study and field experience. Their final projects give an opportunity to go more in-depth into individual topics of interest. Students then present these final projects to the larger school community at the conclusion of the cycle.
