In this Botany course, students explore “plants from the ground up.” At the beginning of the course, they study the process of photosynthesis and its role for the plant. They also look at the structure and health of different soils, and then proceed to examine the plant organ system, which includes leaf, stem, root, and shoot. Another major topic is plant reproduction and the role of pollinators in this process. Following each unit of study, students engage in basic lab work and undertake several field experiences to reinforce the concepts covered. Their final projects give an opportunity to go more in-depth into individual topics of interest. Students then present these final projects to the larger school community at the conclusion of the cycle.
