Biology: The Wonders of the Living World

This biology course integrates concepts from botany, anatomy and physiology, and zoology, cultivating wonder and awe in students in response to the diversity and intricacy of creation. The topics covered include cells, tissues, types of plants and plant systems, types of animals (phyla), mammalian body systems, an overview of the body systems of other animal phyla, and an introduction to ecology and natural selection. The course capitalizes on the hands-on work students do on the farm by making connections between these experiences and the concepts taught in the classroom. Labs are also incorporated throughout the course where students can observe the structure and function of different biological systems.

Students gain experience and training in independent scientific inquiry through a yearly Independent Research Project– project creation and proposal, literature review, data collection, analysis, and dissemination of results – with the mentorship of faculty and other experts.
