The advanced bees course concentrates on sustainable honeybee hive management. Focusing on Napa Valley’s locally adapted stock, this hands-on classes and on-going work cover all aspects of beekeeping: history, provisions for forage, monitoring for disease and pests, queen propagation, and honey production. Students study anatomy, gestation and development, specialization of roles within the colony and pollination. A special emphasis is placed on deciphering the best local genetics. Their final projects give an opportunity to go more in-depth into individual topics of interest. Students then present these final projects to the larger school community at the conclusion of the cycle.
