Elementary (Ages 6–12)

The Elementary years mark a profound transformation in a child’s development. The young children of the Primary classroom develop more reasoning minds—curious about how the universe works, fascinated by human history, and eager to understand their place in the world.

At St. Helena Montessori School, our Elementary program serves children ages six through twelve together in three mixed-age classrooms, forming a six-year continuum of intellectual discovery, moral formation, and growing independence. Within this environment, students are not confined to grade-level expectations. Instead, they are given the time, space, and guidance to explore their interests deeply, developing the habits of mind that lead to lasting understanding and a genuine love of learning.

Montessori described the Elementary child as a “reasoning explorer.” Our program responds by presenting the grand story of the universe and humanity through what Montessori called Cosmic Education—an integrated curriculum that reveals the profound connections between mathematics, language, science, history, and the arts.

Students encounter sweeping narratives about the origins of the universe, the emergence of life on Earth, the development of human civilization, and the invention of language and numbers. From these stories emerge countless avenues of exploration. Children pursue research, conduct experiments, write reports, collaborate on projects, and present their discoveries to their peers.

Within this rich intellectual landscape, students develop the qualities most needed for the future: curiosity, perseverance, independence, and the confidence to pursue meaningful work.
