Adolescent Student Life
Work, Study, and Community
Student life in Middle and High School is structured around a deliberate integration of work, study, and community.

Community Work
Students participate daily in meaningful work that sustains the life of the community. This includes farming, animal care, kitchen work, and craftsmanship in wood and
metal shops. Students also contribute to micro-economy enterprises such as the farmstand, bike shop, and seasonal markets.
This work develops discipline, collaboration, and leadership while fostering a deep sense of ownership and contribution.

Study
Academic life is rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, with an emphasis on interconnected learning. Students engage in sustained inquiry, independent research, and collaborative dialogue.
The six-year arc of the program allows for depth, repetition, and increasing sophistication of thought.

Community & Culture
The social life of the program is intentional and formative. Students share meals, participate in excursions, and take part in traditions that strengthen the bonds of community.
Experiences such as overnight trips, excursions, retreats, and cultural outings provide opportunities for growth, reflection, and shared experience.

Leadership & Responsibility
Students are given real opportunities to lead. Older students mentor younger peers, manage projects, and take responsibility for aspects of the community’s daily life.
Through these experiences, students develop confidence, initiative, and the ability to work effectively with others.

Micro-Economy
A hallmark of the program is its micro-economy. Students participate in the production, marketing, and sale of goods generated through their work.
This includes operating a farmstand, managing a general store, contributing to community events, and engaging in entrepreneurial ventures. Through this work, students gain a practical understanding of economics, value creation, and stewardship.

Travel and Experiential Learning
Travel and field experiences extend learning beyond campus. Students participate in local excursions, backpacking trips, and cultural odysseys that connect their studies to the wider world.
These experiences deepen understanding, foster independence, and build lasting community.

Athletics, Arts, and Enrichment
Students have opportunities to participate in athletics, music, drama, and other enrichment activities.
These experiences contribute to the balanced development of the adolescent and provide additional avenues for expression, collaboration, and growth.
