Approach to Technology
Technology with Intention
At St. Helena Montessori, our approach to technology is intentional and grounded in the developmental needs of the child. We believe children are best prepared to use technology well when they first have abundant opportunities to develop the human capacities that technology cannot replace: sustained attention, imagination, movement, conversation, practical competence, meaningful relationships, and direct engagement with the physical world.
In the early years, this means protecting time for hands-on work, exploration, books, nature, creative activity, and face-to-face interaction. As children move through Elementary and into adolescence, technology is introduced progressively and purposefully. Students develop practical digital skills and learn to use technology as a tool for research, communication, productivity, and creation—not simply as a source of passive consumption or distraction.
As students mature, our emphasis increasingly turns toward discernment and responsible independence. Adolescents need opportunities to learn how technology affects their attention, relationships, habits, and use of time, while continuing to benefit from thoughtful guidance and appropriate boundaries from the adults in their lives.
Our goal is neither to reject technology nor to introduce it simply because it is available. We seek to prepare young people who can use technological tools capably and confidently while retaining agency over how and when they use them. Ultimately, technological proficiency should serve the development of the whole person rather than compete with it.
