I cannot overstate what the Montessori environment at SHMS has done for him.

As a mother of a young son with learning differences, I cannot overstate what the Montessori environment at SHMS has done for him. From the Toddler Program through Primary, his teachers have shown deep skill, patience, understanding, expertise, and true love and care for my son. It has been life-changing.

The Montessori method is beautiful because it is built to serve the child and his needs; he has space to move, to work with his hands, and to engage in meaningful, practical life activities that ground and settle him. This has helped him to be able to focus for long periods of time (which he struggled with mightily previously), to absorb lessons, and to learn joyfully in the classroom. He has grown in ways we never expected. He is now writing, doing math, and approaching his work with joy and confidence. He is a different child because of this school and this method, and we are so grateful.

The school fosters a remarkable love of learning; our children became voracious readers, eager to explore their interests and dive deeply into anything that sparked their curiosity.

Our experience at St. Helena Montessori School was exceptional. The staff and administration were highly trained and extraordinarily generous with their time and support. I don’t think you’ll ever encounter another school where teachers are so willing to support both parents and students with such care and where they know your children so well. The parent education opportunities offered before and after school throughout the year were incredibly helpful. We understood what our children were learning, how it was being taught, and why it was being taught in that way.

The school fosters a remarkable love of learning; our children became voracious readers, eager to explore their interests and dive deeply into anything that sparked their curiosity. The school intentionally creates and nurtures a true partnership between teachers, students, and families. The parent community is vibrant and welcoming, and there are so many opportunities to get involved in whatever way works for you and your family. The families we met at SHMS became some of our closest friends. And the students at SHMS really stand out. You can always tell the Montessori kids in town. They are respectful, confident, kind to younger children, and comfortable engaging with people of all ages. Our children loved the Adolescent Program, which prepared them exceptionally well for high school. Their reading comprehension, text analysis, math, and problem-solving skills are incredibly strong, which we know is a direct result of the rich, rigorous curriculum provided to them.

They completed the program before the SHMS high school opened, but if it had been available, they would have attended the SHMS high school because the program is so amazing. Each program at the school supports and challenges all children to reach their fullest potential. It’s truly remarkable.

...the ability to distinguish truth, to recognize justice and beauty, and to understand faith are some of the most important things a school can cultivate...

“The number one thing I’d say is the well-rounded nature of the education. I didn’t just take classroom classes, and I also didn’t just take trade classes. I learned elements of cooking, animal husbandry, metalworking, woodworking, farming, and different science-related disciplines in addition to all of the academic coursework.
I think having that open mentality — not seeing yourself as ‘just a student’ who stays in the classroom — is incredibly valuable. A student can learn out in the real world, too. In many ways, the experience I’ve had here feels much more connected to the real world than a more traditional school experience. By the nature of the school and the structure of the education, you have more opportunities to interact with the world directly, to engage in real work, real business, and real practice.

I think that attitude and those experiences will help me moving forward.

I also think the ability to distinguish truth, to recognize justice and beauty, and to understand faith are some of the most important things a school can cultivate. Those are just a few of the things this education has given me.”

Explore, engage, integrate. That's what children in Montessori schools do

Explore, engage, integrate. That's what children in Montessori schools do.

It's increasingly become basically teachers telling, students hearing, and then students completing, you know, students responding to standardized tests, right? Standardized testing has driven everything that happens in public education. Montessori, if you wanted to sum it up in three words, it's the opposite of teacher-student test. I think of it as what's going on in a Montessori environment, exploring, engaging, and integrating.

It's a whole philosophical approach to life. You've got this deep, well-articulated philosophy that points to the need for profound respect for that developing child's, their right to their self-construction.

He had completely lost interest in learning and was constantly being disciplined for perceived misconduct.  He dreaded going to school.

How things have changed! He loves school again and is engaged and excited in the classroom.

I learned in detail how much my son's work is progressing as he becomes more familiar with the Montessori model (such a diverse and in-depth curriculum), received great feedback on his attitude and motivations, and was offered helpful suggestions on how to engage him at home. Mrs. Carattini devoted a full hour to this effort when my appointment was just 30 minutes!

The heartfelt meeting brought my attention to all of his strengths and an appreciation for the vast and interesting curriculum that he is being exposed to at SHMS.

This should be understood in comparison to his last school where we were barely given 15 minutes during parent/teacher conferences to go over standardized test scores and little more.  There, he had completely lost interest in learning and was constantly being disciplined for perceived misconduct.  He dreaded going to school.

How things have changed! Mrs. Carattini has changed his life!  He loves school again and is engaged and excited in the classroom.

Furthermore, he has made many good friendships with genuine and kind kids who value his friendship. He feels at home.

I am so happy that we found you!
